Mentoplasty or chin surgery can be used either to reduce the size of your chin or to improve its shape by using a chin implant. Chin implants are usually made out of silicone, but there are also other materials that can be used for the procedure. The doctor can create an implant from tissue taken from your body. If you’ll be undergoing a mentoplasty, you need to discuss with your doctor which material will be used.

How It Is Done

The surgeon starts by administering general anesthesia or intravenous sedation for your comfort as he proceeds with the surgery itself. He will then make an incision in your mouth, along the line where your lower lip meets your gums. The implant will then be inserted through that incision. There are cases when a doctor needs to make an incision under your chin, too. A special pocket might be needed so that the implant will stay in place. Your doctor will then close the incisions with absorbable sutures or stitches, which are usually removed after a week or two.

Results and Risks

A mentoplasty will last around 2 hours for each implant that is placed. Some people will need more than one. It is a lengthy operation that may also involve a long recovery period for some individuals. You will notice swelling on your chin that may last up to about 7 days. Even until a couple of months, you may still see some traces of the operation on your face. Visit our What To Do After Surgery page for more tips.

If a man-made implant, such as silicone, is used on you, the results would be permanent. But if the chin implant is made out of your own body tissue, then it will eventually age and deteriorate over time. Make sure you discuss with your doctor and follow his instructions on how to maintain your implants.

Risks associated with chin surgery and implants are rare. But fluid collection and infection are among the possible dangers. Nerve damage can also happen and cause numbness on your lower lip.

If not done or maintained properly, implants on your chin can rupture or shift. Additionally, capsular contracture can also happen. This is a condition where the implant hardens due to the contraction of the scar tissue. Capsular contracture causes the chin implant to be painful and lose shape. Any implant has to be removed immediately in situations like these.

If you’re thinking of having a chin implant, you just need to make sure that you communicate well with your doctor from the first consultation to the post-procedure checkup. Keep in mind that any cosmetic surgery is a personal matter. What works for one patient may not work for you. Make sure you follow the doctor’s instructions on how to care for and maintain your implants.
