Unwanted hair is a common aesthetic and hygiene problem for men and women. The female species, in particular, would often complain about trying almost every kind of method to lose unwanted hair in various parts of their body – upper lip, armpits, bikini area, and legs. Most probably, they have already tried shaving, tweezing, waxing, and other painful methods only to get results that would last for a day or two. Laser hair removal is a treatment that permanently removes unwanted hair by using beams of highly concentrated light.
Aside from hair removal, laser has been a useful medium to enhance skin care procedures like skin rejuvenation and resurfacing.
Procedure
In this particular laser procedure, the area with unwanted hair is shaved and cleaned before an anesthetic cream is applied. The intense beams of the laser will penetrate the skin to the hair follicles, which will then be damaged to the extent that it will be inhibited to produce more hair in the future. While the procedure does bring a bit of discomfort to the patient, it’s still not as painful as waxing or plucking. A laser hair removal session may be over in an hour, but may vary depending on the size of the area being treated. There may be redness in the treated area, but it should disappear shortly after the treatment.
However, some people may have hair that’s naturally resistant to the effects of laser. In these cases, hair may grow again, although they will usually be finer and lighter in color.
Risks and Negative Effects
Of course, you need to be sure that a trusted expert would perform the treatment. Otherwise, laser hair removal side effects and risks may be heightened. Among the common negative skin reactions you might have include skin irritation and pigment changes.
Especially if your skin wasn’t treated with any cooling cream, gel or spray during the treatment, your skin may be irritated. These cooling products prevent the intense beam of light from harming the skin surrounding the area being treated. Some people with sensitive skin may experience not just temporary irritation, but also crusting and scabbing after the procedure.
Aside from this, darkening or lightening of the treated skin may occur. Skin lightening mainly happens to those who have darker skin, oftentimes when an incorrect laser setting is used. These pigment changes, though, are generally temporary.
Laser hair removal cost depends on the area or areas that will be treated. The number of treatment sessions, among all other considerations, can only be known once a physician assesses your unwanted hair problem. A single session, though, usually start from barely US$100. It may seem like a steep price to pay, but for those who have had the treatment and enjoy the convenience and appearance of not having those unwanted hair, the procedure is very much worth the cost.
