The most popular type of cosmetic neck surgery is neck lift, which involves two major procedures – cervicoplasty and platysmaplasty. Cervicoplasty removes excess skin on your neck, while platysmaplasty is done to alter your neck muscles. In some cases, the whole cosmetic process done on the neck involves other treatments like liposuction and Botox injection. Neck liposuction is done when excess fat deposits have to be removed. On the other hand, Botox has to be injected to erase the band lines on the neck that make a person look older than his actual age.

Consulting a Doctor

If you think you’ve got cosmetic concerns about your neck, talk to a doctor about what you want to happen and what your expectations are about the treatment and its results. In most cases, people want to deal with excess skin, excess fat, or a turkey wattle neck. Make sure that you discuss with your doctor your medical history and your current health condition. Remember that it is crucial that you are in good health – physical and mental – if you want to undergo a neck lift.

Preparation for the Surgery

After you had an initial consultation with your doctor, follow his instructions to the letter. You need to follow his advice, especially about what medications you need to avoid before the surgery. This is because there are vitamins and minerals that thin the blood. Taking such medications will increase bleeding.

Also, it is important that you stop smoking at least 2 weeks before the surgery. Failure to quit will contribute to your slow healing process after the procedure. You need to stop your weight loss diet, if you are on one, because you do need all the right quantities of nutrients to aid your recovery.

You need to request for a leave of absence from work for at least one week. Some people may need a longer recovery period.

Procedures Involved

If you’ve got excess fat deposits on your neck, your cosmetic neck surgery will start with a liposuction. If you have weakened or loose neck muscles, a platysmaplasty will be done. Incisions under your chin and/or behind your ears will be done to get to your neck muscle or platysma. Your doctor will manipulate it accordingly and may even need to remove some of it. Permanent sutures will be done to hold the tissue in place. On the other hand, loose skin will be corrected with cervicoplasty to trim parts of the skin and lifting it into place.

More modern methods involve smaller incisions and the use of an endoscope. The doctor will be visually guided by the endoscope throughout the procedure. This requires no general anesthesia, a smaller incision than the usual, and speedier recovery.
