Contrary to what you might believe, a lot of cosmetic surgeries are performed every single month on patients that are younger or 18 years old. Most of the procedures are breast lifts, liposuctions, breast augmentations, tummy tucks and nose reshaping jobs. The problem is that there is a current debate going on that asks whether or not such cosmetic procedures are appropriate for teenagers. The truth is that not everything is debatable and in some cases such operations are required.
One fact that is not really understood by some people is that teenage cosmetic surgery procedures are sometimes necessary. Not all operations out there are linked with modifying appearance because you just want to look better. Some cosmetic surgery procedures are needed as they improve your health. The most common example can be given in a deformed nose that is causing breathing difficulties. If you are suffering from this an operation to fix the problem will make you breathe better and thus have a clear impact on your body and not just make you look good. Also, some breast reduction procedures are necessary in women that are suffering from back problems. It is highly important to understand that certain cosmetic surgeries have to be done, no matter the age of the patient as it does bring in health benefits.
The biggest controversy appears when talking about some procedures like liposuction, breast implants or genital plastic surgery. One of the main concerns that appear is the fact that a teenage body is still maturing. This basically means that recovery is more difficult and the facial features are not fully developed. To make it even worse, most women will continue to lose weight between 18 and 21. Such a fact will bring up a change in the way she thinks about liposuction or breast augmentation. On the other hand, there is absolutely no epidemiological study done in order to tackle the safety of such procedures on teenagers or the associated long term risks.
One thing that has to be considered is the proper understanding of the risks involved with teenage cosmetic surgery. For instance, if we talk about breast implants you should be aware that there is at least one complication that you will need to deal with in the 3 years after the surgery. This could include hematomas, infections or seromas. A regular breast implant will last for 10 years. If you are a teenager then you will have to get many procedures done on your body throughout your life. Proper understanding of the risks involved is very important in teenage cosmetic surgery.
We do not know much about the emotional, economical and physical impacts of teenage cosmetic surgeries on a long term basis. The risks involved are well documented but people are sometimes blinded by the benefits that can be obtained. Unfortunately teenagers are the most affected as they are the ones that rarely understand everything that is involved.
It is very hard to think about whether or not teenagers would have to perform cosmetic surgery procedures on their bodies. In most cases we are talking about them deciding without proper consultation with doctors and parents. As with everything linked with any operation out there, it is highly important that every single aspect involved is properly understood. This includes the actual procedure and the time frame that follows it. You have to understand the possible complications and the impact any surgery will have on your lifestyle. Only after you have all the information you should make a decision. To not be tempted by society or what other people are saying as you have to choose and only after consulting a specialist and talking about everything with him/her.
