Cosmetic surgery procedures that are performed today are a result of many years of evolution. It started out very simple and evolved into a huge medical industry that has more clients every single year. To put it simple, the history of cosmetic surgery started with minor defects reconstruction and led to procedures that are very complex and tailored to modify a lot of our body parts.

Contrary to popular belief, the history of cosmetic surgery starts around 3000 years in the past. We are talking about Indians and Egyptians. There are many documents found from that period that describe how the surgeons of the time would reconstruct noses, lips and ears. Skin grafts were utilized and cut from cheeks or foreheads.

During the Roman and Greek period we noticed an improvement of cosmetic surgery. There are texts that show us procedures that are very complicated like lip reconstruction and tensionless suture lines. You should know that medicine was highly advanced even at that point in time and as time passed people started to learn more about tissue health, bone reconstruction and blood circulation. All the information is now available and we do know that during those times people did cosmetic surgeries that were quite difficult at that moment in cosmetic surgery history.

Many people think that cosmetic surgery is a new trend because of the Middle Ages. That was when we were faced with times that were full of barbarity and superstition. It was believed that cosmetic surgery was evil and against the divinity. It was banned and people started to think less about their bodies and even hygiene. Unfortunately, if you would have been living then and you needed reconstructive surgery, you would not have many possibilities available.

During the Renaissance we saw that cosmetic surgery started to appear again thanks to the texts found from ancient India, Rome and Greece. Science and technology evolved and eventually led to believing that plastic surgery was possible. The problem was that superstition and faulty theories destroyed all that medicine did well in the past. The history of cosmetic surgery only had a new breath of fresh air during the 18th century. What is interesting is the fact that one British cattle driver had his nose repaired by a bricklayer of Indian origin. He used a special technique that was a thousand years old. Thanks to press exposure the incident led to the realization that cosmetic surgery was possible. This led towards the 19th century being the start of what we now label modern plastic surgery.

After World War I plastic surgeons ended up perfecting a lot of their techniques. This is because a lot of people needed such procedures as reconstruction was needed. Hundreds of doctors fought hard to aid individuals that were wounded and scarred for life. That was when a lot of people started to understand the importance of cosmetic surgery. Nowadays we are faced with a current level of advancement that people 50 years before would not have thought possible.

Even as you read these lines you should know that somewhere in the world research is being done and we are constantly faced with evolution in cosmetic surgery procedures. We can say that what we do not think possible at the moment might be a reality in some years. It is quite interesting to see the rate at which everything is evolving as research is going a little slow when compared with a few years ago but this is because there are already so many possibilities available. We can say that there are actually a lot of cosmetic surgery procedures that you surely did not know about!
